Responsible testing: permission is the first control

Responsible security testing means you have written permission, a defined target, and a stop rule. At CEC you only test lab systems we provide. If the next step would leave that network, you stop. That habit is the difference between a security learner and someone creating legal risk.

  • Read the scope before any scan or login attempt

Tools you meet, including AI

Exact utilities change with the batch and the lab image. What does not change: every tool stays on approved targets, and you must be able to explain the output without copying a blog post.

    Browser tools and request traces on practice web apps so you see how a page actually talks to a server.

  • Discovery on lab subnets

    Scan utilities pointed only at approved lab IPs. You learn to read output, not to collect a tool list.

  • Linux and scripting

    Commands and small Python or Bash helpers for notes, repeats, and log slices—always inside the lab.

  • AI as a lab assistant

    We use AI to outline reports, explain a log line in simpler words, and quiz you on ethics. You still match every claim to your own evidence.

How we actually use AI in this path

AI is part of how we train, not a separate AI-security product. You use it to draft, explain, and quiz. Mentors check whether your lab evidence supports the sentence. If the model invented a finding, you delete it. Permission and scope never come from a chatbot.

  • Turn your bullet notes into a first-draft finding heading—then you rewrite against the actual scan output
  • Ask why a port being open might matter, then confirm with the mentor on the practice host
  • Classify a sample alert type before you look at the defensive side of the same program
  • Generate a short quiz on scope and permission; wrong answers get discussed in class, not ignored
  • AI can invent a vulnerability that was not on the lab host. If you cannot show it, it is not a finding.
  • AI does not grant permission. Scope still comes from us, in writing, for that session.
  • AI is weak at legal judgment. We teach you when to stop, not how to prompt around the rule.

What a lab session feels like

Labs are where the path becomes real. You are not watching a recording of someone else’s terminal. You are on the practice host, with a mentor in the room or on the batch channel.

    You walk a mentor-hosted web app, list weaknesses in scope, and propose fixes. The deliverable is the report, not a screenshot dump.

    You map services on an isolated subnet, flag misconfigurations, and explain what a defender would change first.

  • Retest after a patch

    After a classmate or mentor closes an issue, you check whether it is actually closed and record the difference.
