Weak ask
“Write a good answer about GST.”
No audience, no length, no source, no stop. The model fills the gaps with confident guesses.
Structured ask
“For a first-year BCom student, list four GST invoice fields in bullets. Use only this note. If a field is missing, say ‘not in the note.’ Do not invent rates.”
Job, materials, shape, and stops are visible. You can score the reply against that list.
Four lines on paper beat a clever paragraph nobody else can rerun. This is not a secret template shop.
A parent, a lab partner, or a first-year student. Vague “everyone” produces vague text.
Paste only what you are allowed to share. If the note does not contain a number, the prompt must forbid inventing one.
Three bullets, a table, or a function stub. Open essays hide missing facts.
No medical advice, no legal conclusion, no fee, no “we guarantee.” Stops are part of the prompt, not an afterthought.
You write a weak version and a structured version of the same job. Mentors compare the replies side by side. The skill is the difference, not a longer paragraph.
A second message: “List what you assumed.” If it assumed a rate you did not give, the first prompt was unfinished.
We practice the habit on the tools in lab. We do not sell a ChatGPT-only course or an “AI prompt” clone URL. The instruction should work when the product name changes.
You score the reply against the prompt you wrote. If it fails a mark, you rewrite the ask—not the model’s personality. That is how we teach evaluation without pretending a percentage is a career.
Format
Pass. Bullets, table, or stub matches what you asked.
Retry. A wall of prose you cannot scan in thirty seconds.
Grounding
Pass. Claims sit in the materials you provided, or it said “not in the note.”
Retry. A fluent extra fact you cannot point to.
Stops
Pass. It refused the thing you forbade.
Retry. It still invented a fee, a diagnosis, or a guarantee.
Reuse
Pass. A teammate could run the same prompt tomorrow.
Retry. Only you remember the hidden context from chat history.
No customer names, GSTIN dumps, passwords, or student marks in a public chat. Lab notes are enough.
“Act as a doctor / lawyer / CA” does not make the reply qualified. We write the stop instead of the costume.
If you cannot say how you verified the reply, it is not finished work. Fluency is not evidence.
High AI use: models draft; your score and your stops still decide what leaves the lab.
Prompt engineering helps you brief a model. It does not replace Python, data work, projects, or counseling. If someone sells “prompts = AI career,” that is not how we teach at CEC.
If assignments now expect AI drafts, we add the missing lab: structure the ask, score the reply, refuse invented facts. Theory stays yours.
Non-IT backgrounds are welcome. Prompt skill is an entry habit, not a shortcut past Python or data work if counseling says those come first.
